Interior Bears Moving In

No pictures yet, but lots of signs. I heard that the Bella Coola bears are fat and sleeping, but just like "Grizzily Man", the interior bears are coming down off the prairie. There's still salmon swiming and dying up and down the river.

We counted 18 eagles yesterday morning. The dogs won't let us sleep late with these giant birds outside the window.

No more flowers

24" of fresh snow. Some young trees snapped, but the old growth group in the front lawn weren't badly effected.

Snow Has Stopped

Easterly winds brought artic temperatures to the valley, not seen in nine years. The artic air mass also brought in the biggest snowfall in years. Salmon are dying up and down the river. Too bad, the bears are most likely hibernated by now.

Many eagles fly & perch nearby. The dogs are out fishing alot.

It's Shameless Band Promotion Day

Oh, and get this, our audio twin, MGH is Actually Climbing the Charts over at the battling unsigned band web site: Garageband.com

In the past 3 days, we've jumped over 150 bands, but at the same time, the reviews all say 'this shouldn't be in this category' .. blah blah.

If anyone wants to go over and rate our music (1 - 5, 5's preferred. 1's understood), please do.

Waiting for the Rains

We've been hanging out at the estuary these past few mornings.
The salmon are circling the bay, waiting for the rains to flood the rivers, streams and side creeks.

The build-up of fish has attracted all the familiar predators. Some seals were upset at us for approaching. One growled and breached fairly close. We braced ourselves and went closer.

We finally took the hint and went inland.
The water is still, but it's not quiet.
We've never seen so many eagles and other large birds.

"Hello Folks,
Heard this at a Party & made a copy. Incredible stuff. Thanks for the Bad News and Good Music."

Pat, in MD said...
".. there's a musical clarity and grandeur to this material that listeners familiar with CRIB DEATH and MISS POLKA may not expect. Artistic progress is a grand thing and those very listeners are likely to appreciate what they've been up to lately. Pass this music by at your own peril."

"Dear dada duo,
You guys are the scariest talents i've ever encountered. your work and in fact all your life choices give me hope that this planet can be, well, beyond just palatable. Perhaps even rich and heavenly. Thank you for that. A walking sitcom like me needs inspiration."

Old Style Fish Smoke Houses

There are about a half dozen burnt and hollowed trees in the woods.

Local folks say these stumps were used to smoke fish.

The trees are all located within a few hundred yards of the river.

In Search of Swimming Holes..

Today we drove up to Bluejay Lake.
We stopped and swam anywhere that looked inviting.
After cooling off, we hiked a trail that overlooks the Bay.

Below is a picture of a meadow of wild cotton.
It was hot in the sun, but a cool breeze blew from the direction we were walking in.

The dogs had to jump in every watering hole. Some were deep.
Eventually, we arrived at the overlook:

The dock was the perfect place to rest and look over the water.
We spotted, what looked like, two bears across the way.

When we got back to the lake, we needed one more swim.

New Swimming Hole Found

We spotted a swimming hole from the top of this mountain.
It was just a short climb down through the meadows of heather.

Finally found a warm swimming hole.
It's like swimming in a dream.

The rock on the left side heats up and is a great place to sit. To the right is an earthen damn that drops off thousands of feet. The water is crystal clear and only about 8 - 9 feet deep.

Can't wait to go back in August when the purple and white heather will be blooming.

Flying Over the Ice Fields Back Home

This has got to be seen to be believed. The blue color in the image doesn't do it justice.

Back Up Top -
Odegaard Falls

I couldn't help but try again and capture these falls.

I've taken dozens of pictures, but none of them do it justice.

It's really got to be seen.

First Journey up to the Sub Alpine

The Bella Coola Guide that mentioned this mountain road is typically buried in snow pack until mid July, but we thought we'd try it June 3rd. Anyone surprised - we had no problem driving right up past 650ft Odegaard Falls, and into the sub alpine.

We did find one snow avalanche. It blocked the road, so we got out to cross the snow & debris by foot. There were no other obstructions for the two miles or so we ventured.

There were waterfalls & rainbows everywhere. The warm temperatures melted the snow pack leaving the creeks and waterfalls roaring. As we ventured up the road, we came across more and more ponds and lakes.

We can't wait to go back. These pictures just can't capture the awesome feeling it gives you. Lots of lakes to kayak, boulder fields, and crystal clear deep water channels running throughout the expansive meadows. An amazing place to wander around & enjoy the views. Can only imagine the wild flowers that appear later this summer.

We did come across a very large black bear. Just looked at us and continued on his way. I didn't think they got that big..

When we turned around to go back, a late afternoon downpour chased us to the car and down into the valley.
